Biodegrading plastics with a synthetic non-biodegradable enzyme

چکیده

Biodegradation of plastics through the use enzymes provides an attractive, environmentally friendly solution to dispose and recycle plastic wastes. Although many natural engineered plastic-degrading have been developed, their practical applications are hindered by biodegradation in open environments. We reasoned that most popularly used plastics, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), achiral hence can be hydrolyzed both l- d-amino acid versions enzymes. Here, we chemically synthesized a mirror-image version 231-aa PET hydrolase, which is capable efficiently degrading variety PET, polybutylene (PBT), succinate (PBS) but meanwhile itself resistant soil extract seawater from environment. The synthetic hydrolase demonstrates potential new class plastic-degrading, non-biodegradable help address pollution problem our homochiral biosphere.

Synthetic Non-Biodegradable Polymers:

Synthetic polymers have been widely used in making various medical devices, such as disposable supplies, implants, drug delivery systems and tissue engineering scaffolds. The advantages of using polymers, as biomaterials, are their manufacturability. Polymers are easy to fabricate into various sizes and shapes compared to metals and ceramics. They are also light in weight and with a wide range ...

Biodegradable and compostable alternatives to conventional plastics.

Packaging waste forms a significant part of municipal solid waste and has caused increasing environmental concerns, resulting in a strengthening of various regulations aimed at reducing the amounts generated. Among other materials, a wide range of oil-based polymers is currently used in packaging applications. These are virtually all non-biodegradable, and some are difficult to recycle or reuse...

starch-based biodegradable polymers and packaging plastics

it seems that today whole world seems to be wrapped in plastics. almost every product we buy, most of the food we eat and many of the liquids we drink, come encased in plastics. the environmental impact of persistent plastic wastes is evoking more global concern as alternative disposal methods are limited. incineration may generate toxic air pollution, and satisfactory landfill sites are limite...

Degradation of Biodegradable/Degradable Plastics in Municipal Solid-Waste Landfill

This paper provides information about biodegradability of biodegradable/degradable materials advertised as 100%-degradable or certified as compostable in a municipal solid-waste landfill. It describes a 12month experiment with five samples that took place in a landfill. The results, demonstrated that the polyethylene sample with the additive (samples 1) and sample labelled as 100% degradable (s...

The second green revolution? Production of plant-based biodegradable plastics.

Biodegradable plastics are those that can be completely degraded in landfills, composters or sewage treatment plants by the action of naturally occurring micro-organisms. Truly biodegradable plastics leave no toxic, visible or distinguishable residues following degradation. Their biodegradability contrasts sharply with most petroleum-based plastics, which are essentially indestructible in a bio...
